Now, onto the notes. Like I mentioned earlier, notes are not the same as transcripts. With captioning, your job is to capture everything that is said to the best of your ability, including the jokes.
When you take notes, however you are only taking down important points that pertain to the topic and class at hand.
That means the instructor's life story and side conversations do not need to be included. Headings, sub-headings and distinctions between concepts have to be crystal clear. Adding bullet points to a transcript does not make them a set of notes.
Imagine that you'd have to refer to a set of notes in order to complete a timed test, you won't have sufficient time to read through lines and lines dialogue that does not pertain to the topic that's being tested.
Going forward, you will have to follow these formatting rules so our clients know that the notes come from a service provider at Habitat Learn. Every note-taker is expected to follow this format to standardize the service that we provide to our clients.
That includes bolding and underlining subjects, underlining sub-topics so the learners can look for separate concepts easily if they scan the document. Including descriptors as separate bullet points, any new vocabulary and terms related to the main topic should be bolded and upcoming dates and times should be highlighted so the learners remember to revisit them.
Your notes should not be written as chunked paragraphs because it tends to be harder to pick out the vital information. Your document should be saved as an editable .doc or .docx format so the learner can reformat text if they need to. It's also easier to detect on an screen-reader for learners who have some form of vision impairment.
Lastly, please use the font Verdana and font size 12 for all your notes going forward. Again, the learner can choose to change it later on but the standard for all Habitat Learn service providers is to use that chosen font because it was made for accessible readability on digital devices.
Plus, no matter what word processing application you use, Verdana is always an option. You may be assigned some technical classes in during your time as a note-taker and that could include noting diagrams and complicated equations in your document.
You can take a screenshot or picture of the diagram or equation, as long as the instructor gives you permission to do so. But if you are going to whip your camera out in class, make sure there are no students or faces in view.
